Surrealism                     Europe, 1924 to 1950's

Surrealism was a fascinating cultural movement, centered in Paris in the early 20th century, that was devoted to dreams and the unconscious mind, and to shaking up the status quo. Surrealism was originally a literary movement, begun by poets and writers, but a number of painters and other visual artists who joined the group produced striking images that we now associate with the term Surrealism. Among them are some of the most unusual paintings in the history of art.The Surrealist artists tried to portray images from dreams, and used jarring juxtapositions and distortions of ordinarly objects to create scenes meant to convey the seemingly irrational dream state. Their paintings were often intended to be disconcerting and disorienting.

ARTIST:

Salvador Dalí was born on May 11, 1904, in Figueres, Spain. From an early age, Dalí was encouraged to practice his art and would eventually go on to study at an academy in Madrid. In the 1920s, he went to Paris and began interacting with artists such asPicasso, Magritte and Miró, which led to Dalí's first Surrealist phase. He is perhaps best known for his 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory, showing melting clocks in a landscape setting. The rise of fascist leader Francisco Franco in Spain led to the artist's expulsion from the Surrealist movement, but that didn't stop him from painting. Dalí died in Figueres in 1989. http://www.biography.com/people/salvador-dal%C3%AD-40389
